How to Draw Ray Diagram for derivation of distance between virtual sources  in

 Bi-prism experiment ?

The distance d  between virtual sources S1  and S2 is measured by Conjugate foci method for Bi-prism experiment. For this, lens of focal length  f is introduced between bi-prism and eye piece and eye piece is set at 4f distance from slit.

Fig A
Fig B

When lens is towards bi-prism at L1  position as shown in Fig A, magnified images of S1  and S2 are obtained and their distance d1 is measured.

When lens is towards screen at L2  position as shown in Fig B, diminished images of S1  and S2 are obtained and their distance d2 is measured.

In these two positions the object distance u and image distance v are interchanged.

d1  / d  =  v / u           For position as in fig A

d2  / d  =  u / v           For position as in fig B

Multiplying these equations and rearranging,

Hence distance d between two virtual sources is determined in Bi-prism experiment.
